What role should the US Play in the forthcoming COP/MOP Negotiation that will decide the post-2012 outlook of the Kyoto Protocol ?

The cop/mop meeting in December 2009 is about 150 days away. The meeting, which will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, will serve as an important pointer to the shape what will become the post-2012 environment for the existing Kyoto Protocol. The United States of America is expected to play a leading role in this discussion, and what will emerge as the post-2012 global climate change mitigation environment. What should the US consider as its role in the forthcoming Copenhagen discussions on this issue?
